You’re looking at the future of Mercedes-AMG – and it’s all-electric.
The brand famous for its powerful V8 and V12 engines is preparing for its next evolution, presenting its performance take on Mercedes’ Vision EQXX prototype (which can reportedly cover up to 1000km on a single charge), with the Vision AMG.
The sweeping, aerodynamically-honed appearance of the EQXX is given a tougher twist for this AMG version, with a unique ‘light grille’, headlights designed to evoke the three-pointed star, larger, sportier wheels and a rear diffuser.
The car is also finished in a livery inspired by the AMG Formula 1 team, with silver-on-silver stars and the Petronas green that has become synonymous with the German performance cars in recent years.
Under the surface the Vision AMG is built on the all-new AMG.EA platform, which features a new “Axial Flux Motor” developed by Mercedes’ subsidiary YASA, as well as a high-voltage battery. AMG claims the “compact and lightweight design delivers substantially more power than conventional electric motors” but stopped short of providing any performance claims or details on range.
Mercedes-AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer did confirm that the first all-electric AMG model will arrive in 2025, but it’s unclear how closely it will follow the Vision AMG concept.
While a major departure for the brand, Schiemer is confident that its future electric models will live up to AMG’s reputation for high-performance vehicles.
“AMG is reinventing itself,” Schiemer explained. “As was once the case with our founding fathers, there has been an amazing feeling of new beginnings here in Affalterbach for quite some time now. The course has been well and truly set for an electrified future, and we’ve set the bar high. That’s because our customers expect something very special from all-electric cars.
